Positive effects of deadlines

No deadlines

We have all faced many deadlines, and most of us have felt pressure because of them. The negative feelings associated with deadlines can make them unbearable, especially for procrastinators who tend to leave everything to the last minute. Part of me belongs to that group, and it has served me well in the past. A little pressure pushes me just enough to get things done efficiently. We should view deadlines as activation methods that give us a boost of energy rather than torturing tools that suppress our creativity.

Rules and agreements guide us, and an internally built-in compass helps us navigate. However, we sometimes fail to see the positive aspects of deadlines. Closing in on a deadline gives an adrenaline boost that helps us reach our goals, especially for those wired that way. I tested myself on this matter. I told myself that I had all the time in the world to complete a task, and that allowed me to use any excuse not to engage with the assignment. It took me way longer to complete the task because I lacked self-discipline without a set deadline.

Farmers have always lived by seasonal deadlines, and certain things must be done before winter and snow. Many deadlines exist by nature, and we are accustomed to them. How can we make deadlines more manageable? We should set manageable goals and measure our resources before setting deadlines. This does not mean that there should be plenty of time for everything. It means that before agreeing on any deadlines, we should go over the project realistically and set a timeline accordingly. Make it tight enough to give the needed boost but not so tight that it prevents us from aiming for the best possible outcome. All tasks weigh differently, so we should prioritize our time.

One way to ease the pressure is to break the project into smaller tasks. Visualize the path with all stepping stones and enjoy the journey. Reward yourself after completing less enjoyable tasks. Make sure to promise yourself that reward at the beginning to give a positive tune to your efforts.

Focus is crucial. All tasks should require focus and concentration. Set your timetable, and remember that interruptions will occur. Learn to keep your focus on the task at hand and not panic. Keeping the mind calm is the best option. Always aim to make the best of what is given and never settle for the blame game.
